Few low-priced inkjets can print up to tabloid size (11 by 17 inches). This useful feature is available on the Brother MFC-J4420DW inkjet multifunction printer (MFP), as it is on other models in Brother’s Business Smart line. It’s also very fast for an inkjet MFP that costs as much. The output quality could be better, but it is still good enough for most business needs. You could also choose MFC-J4620DW.

You can print, copy, scan, and fax with the Brother MFC-J4420DW All-In-One. It can print and fax from and scan to a computer, even over a network. It can also work as a standalone copier and fax machine, print directly from a PictBridge-compatible camera, and print from and scan to a USB memory key. An automatic document feeder (ADF) can hold up to 20 pages so that you can scan, copy, and fax multipage documents. The paper tray and the ADF have small capacities, so this model is best for use in a home office or a small office or as a personal printer in a larger office.

Print Speed

On our business applications suite hardware and software for timing, I timed the Brother MFC-J4420DW at a snappy 6.3 pages per minute (ppm), outpacing the Brother MFC-J470DW.  Editors’ Choice inkjet MFPs include the (Opens in a new window) (4.9ppm), the Brother MFC-J4410DW, and the HP Officejet Pro 6830 e-All-in-One Printer (3.5ppm).

Output Quality

Overall, the MFC-output J4620DW’s quality is poor, with mediocre text, graphics, and pictures. The text quality is still sufficient for business purposes that don’t require small fonts. Some backgrounds in images appear slightly faded, while others exhibit moderate banding, a recurring pattern of subtle striations.

Dithering can also be seen as dot patterns. The MFC-J4420DW struggled to print fine lines. Although the visuals are suitable for internal corporate use, they fall short of the standards I’d set for publishing official reports.

The MFC-J4420 differs from traditional home-office MFPs like the Brother MFC-J870DW and the HP Officejet Pro 6830 e-All-in-One Printer, two Editors’ Choice models, in that it offers tabloid-size printing. In exchange, such versions provide greater output quality, connection, and a wealth of additional capabilities, including Ethernet and, in the case of the MFC-J870DW, NFC.

Product Comparison

The Brother MFC-J4420DW stands out from most inkjets with comparable prices since it can print at tabloid size. Another great advantage is its speed. It is quick for a cheap inkjet multifunction printer (MFP) intended for a home office, a sole proprietorship, or a personal inkjet for any size office.

Although the output quality may be higher, it is still adequate for most business applications. Although its output quality wasn’t as outstanding in our testing and didn’t have that model’s Ethernet connectivity or memory-card reader, it is speedier than the Editors’ Choice Brother MFC-J4410DW.

Testing

 Although the results of our tests didn’t quite match those numbers (17 ppm for mono Word documents and 13 ppm for PDF files with text and color graphics), the J4420DW is unquestionably quick enough for the majority of home users and small enterprises.

It also has good print quality. Although not exactly laser-quality, the text outlines in our documents were very smooth and were sufficient to print business letters or academic papers. The J4420DW is well-suited for corporate graphics and charts, and color graphics were also good. However, plain-paper prints of photographs were less attractive, with very flat colors and mild banding on larger images.

Fortunately, printing a 6×4 postcard took just 40 seconds using glossy photo paper, which also gave results with considerably brighter colors. A3 posters with text headlines and images might be printed using the A3 printing option in around 50 seconds or less.

The J4420DW can’t match the subtle tonal graduations of more expensive printers that use five or more inks because it only uses four standard inks (cyan, magenta, yellow, and black). Still, it’s a useful option if you only occasionally need to produce A3 text and graphics documents for school work or your office.

Additionally, color printing proves to be pretty economical. Brother’s high-yield color cartridges provide a competitive 5p per page yield and are available directly from Brother. The high-yield black cartridge costs £31.19, or 2.6p per page, and prints 1200 pages as well. It will be worthwhile to search around to see if you can find lower pricing online because although it isn’t outrageous, it is at the higher end of the typical range for mono printing.
