For a cheap inkjet printer, our black text paper printed at 19.2 pages per minute (PPM), but the color graphics caused the speed to drop to 5.6 ppm. Printing high-quality images took more than three minutes per 6×4 inch.

The scanner crept through a 1200 dpi scan in 2.5 minutes while taking 28 seconds to capture an A4 page at a sharp 600 dpi. The WF-3620D WF was significantly faster, but you won’t need that resolution very often, and it’s a problem we’ve experienced with other MFPs. In our tests, the 3720’s print and scan quality were passable, with minor advancements over its predecessor, keeping in mind that this isn’t a high-end photo printer.

The 3620DWF was once offered for sale (and is still available) for one hundred pounds. Although the 3720 has an official, dealers, as usual, are downplaying this. Some Amazon Marketplace sellers were listing it as we went to press. The drawback is that the 3720 uses a different kind of cartridge, and color pages cost more than 9p even when using XL inks, which is more expensive than the 3620 and average.

We looked at Epson’s Workforce Pro WF-C5790DWF, which HP’s outstanding PageWide Pro 477dw barely edged out.
